Edgbaston, Birmingham: Warwickshire County Cricket Club celebrated its first domestic T20 Double Header Day at Edgbaston on Sunday with Birmingham Bears men’s and women’s teams securing wins.
After the men’s team defeated Leicestershire Foxes by 28 runs in the NatWest T20 Blast, Birmingham Bears Women continued their unbeaten run in the NatWest Women’s T20 by beating Lancashire Women by 31 runs.
Neil Snowball, Chief Executive of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, said: “Sunday was a great occasion for the club overall and particularly for development of the women’s game in Birmingham and Warwickshire, with nearly 3,000 spectators staying on to support the Birmingham Bears Women.
“We’ve made huge progress in the women’s game in recent seasons and hopefully the continued development and increased opportunities to watch the team will encourage many more women and girls to get involved in the game.”
Birmingham Bears top the NatWest Women’s T20 table with four wins from five games (one match abandoned) and will secure the club’s first silverware at the senior level of the women’s game if they can win one of the two remaining fixtures against Kent and Middlesex at next Sunday’s double header at Beckenham.
Warwickshire Women are also unbeaten and top the table of the Royal London Women’s One-Day County Championship with three games to go.
Darren Franklin, Head of Women & Girls Cricket for Warwickshire CCC, said: “The opportunity to play at Edgbaston is something that the women’s team have been looking forward to for several months and a huge thank you goes to all of the supporters who stayed to watch and cheer on the team.
“As a club we have a great set-up for the women’s game, with the new Edgbaston Foundation Sports Ground on Portland Road now established as our home ground and a good number of young players coming through to challenge for places in the senior team.
“The players have worked incredibly hard in developing their game over the winter months and we’re having a fantastic season as a result. Next Sunday is a huge day for the club and we’ll certainly be doing everything to bring home our first senior women’s title.”
