An assertive top-order batsman, Purdy brings to the Bears quality and experience honed over many years with club and country.
His Ireland career, latterly as captain, has coincided with some of the country's greatest achievements: victories over Pakistan and Bangladesh in the 2007 World Cup; qualification for the World T20 in 2009 and victory over England in the 2011 World Cup.
Purdy has captained Ireland at every level from U13 upwards, going on to skipper Ireland 'A' before leading the senior side in both white-ball formats since 2008. He brings a lot of nous to the Bears' batting and is one of the best point fielders in the game.
His bullish batting has given many a Birmingham innings decisive impetus. Whoever the bowler, if a ball is there to be hit, Purdy will hit it - he is closing in on 100 sixes in T20 cricket.
