To achieve success it's vital for a team to have young players challenging the senior guys for places and all-rounder Matt is definitely knocking on the door.
A product of North Bromsgrove School and Barnt Green CC, Matt has been in the Bears' system since the age of nine. Last season he received his first-team chances in championship and 50-over cricket and he showed he has the skills and temperament to handle the step up.
Matt spent the winter hard at work in the Indoor School at Edgbaston, not least with bowling coach Pop Welch as he strives to turn himself into a true all-rounder. You can't have too many of those in a T20 team so, while still to feature for the Bears in the format, his chance may well come in 2018 as a medium-pace bowler and potentially game-changing batsman.
"Matt is capable of taking teams apart," said first-team coach Jim Troughton.
